Remembering a Great Friend.
Words by Tyler Byrnes:
A little over a month ago, a fellow local rider and my good friend, Greg Jones, had an unfortunate crash on the Happy Hour trail on Galbraith.
Although we had two other riders in our group, no one witnessed the fall until coming around the corner and seeing him on the ground. His friends and other riders that came upon the scene tended to Greg immediately and, after assessing the situation, medics were called and he was taken to St. Joseph’s for treatment.
Word travels quickly in our community and a lot of people have been asking for updates about Greg’s condition since his accident.
Unfortunately, the injuries Greg sustained were too severe and he passed away on July 26th at Harborview Hospital in Seattle with his family by his side. It’s hard to believe that a quiet evening ride with a few buddies could end in such tragedy, but it is important to remember that the sport so many of us love comes with inherent risks.
Greg was an experienced mountain biker; he knew the trails well and wasn’t one to take unnecessary risks, yet the unimaginable still happened. Greg had a zest for life, and particularly anything that got him out in nature. He would not only insist that we keep on riding, but also implore us to cherish those rides and the memories they create.
Please take a moment on your next ride to think about how fortunate you are to be able to take part in such an amazing sport, and for those of you who knew Greg and rode with him, push hard into one of your favorite corners and send him a good loud BRAAAPPP!
If you would like to make a donation in memory of Greg, he was very passionate about Faith in Practice (the group he traveled with to Guatemala).
If you’d like to help the Jones family, there is a GoFundMe page to help with medical bills and college funds for their two children – Isabel (Izzy) and Lucas.
You can also send your thoughts and love to Greg’s family here.
Ride in Peace, Greg.
